401k inaction

Death occured in 2007. 401k RMD’s in order. What happens if there is no action by the primary beneficiary who is also the spouse, other than taking required RMD’s? The primary beneficiary will not outlive the account assets.

When the surviving spouse passes, the successor beneficiary must take RMDs based on the surviving spouse’s age at death with divisor reduced by 1.0 each year. However, it is vital for the surviving spouse be to able to name a successor beneficiary, otherwise the survivor should do the rollover.
