stretch ira

can the stretch ira be activated by separating the benes of non spouse benes on the applications for separate benes to start at any age of the owner of the ira. thank you. charles owsianka

Changes of beneficiaries can be made anytime up to the IRA owner’s death. After the owner passes, all individual beneficiaries can create separate inherited IRA accounts under the separate account rules. If this is done by 12/31 of the year following the year of death, each beneficiary can use their own life expectancy for RMDs, the same as if they each inherited a separate IRA account. If this deadline is missed, all of them must use the age of the oldest beneficiary.  Note that ALL IRAs can be stretched by a combination of not taking out more than the RMD, taking advantage of the separate account rules, and by not naming beneficiaries that are very old or leaving the IRA to the estate.
